Winamp was born as a very basic media player and has slowly but consistently improving for many years. Its main purpose was to be completely customizable and through the years, many people have contributed to a library that now consists of over 20,000 skins and loads of plug-ins.

When Winamp version 5 was released, Nullsoft redeemed themselves in the public's eyes after producing a much improved player to replace Winamp 3. They didn't need much encouragement as they justified skipping version number 4 by saying that it was such a huge improvement that it deserved to be called 5!

Luckily they are justified in their opinion, as Winamp offers everything you might want in a media player. Using the skins, you can set it to look like the original or the current default which looks great and puts you in control of all your media quickly and easily. I particularly like Winamp's minimized player that consists of a small bar that you can place on the edge of your screen. Of course, if neither of these agree with your taste you can download and try any of the thousands others available on the Winamp website.

Winamp supports a wide range of file formats, and because the program is small and simple, it works quickly on almost all computers. Have a look through the available plug-ins and you will also find that you can hook up your iPod and manage its music library.

Winamp may have been around for ever, but it hasn't been left behind and is a fully featured music player that's really customizable. A good alternative to iTunes.

If you're not satisfied with the Bluetooth detector on your PC then try BluetoothView which simplifies connecting to Bluetooth devices.

BluetoothView is a small utility that runs in the background and monitors the activity of Bluetooth devices around you. For each detected Bluetooth device, it displays the Device Name, Bluetooth Address, Major Device Type, Minor Device Type, First Detection Time, Last Detection Time and other minor details. The program works very discreetly and only notifies you in the taskbar with a popup when it has discovered a new device. However, if you don't want the balloon in your taskbar, you can always instruct it to use a beep sound instead. To be honest, unless your bluetooth detector on your PC is really poor you don't really need this utility but then again, if you constantly work between Bluetooth devices, then you'll find it a much better way to find and connect than manually searching for them.

If you're a heavy Bluetooth user, then you'll find that BluetoothView makes life easier in finding the devices you need to connect to.

The way that Bitcasa makes your folders and storage infinite is by storing all of your files in their cloud. Nothing will be stored on your local machine, relying on an internet connection to access your files. That's the biggest caveat about Bitcasa, which is that you must have a high speed internet connection to access your files.

Thankfully, Bitcasa also syncs your files, if you don't want to rely on an internet connection to access your files. By syncing your files, Bitcasa makes sure that the most recent changes to your files is persistent across all of your machines. You also can work with your files offline and syncing will take place once you connect to the internet.

For the paranoid, Bitcasa uses AES-256 bit encryption on their servers so your files are well protected from hackers and prying eyes. For those not familiar with encryption algorithms, you can rest knowing that AES-256 is very secure.

In use, Bitcasa works well and has pretty speedy performance. It can be a bit confusing trying to access your infinite folders at first but once you see how everything can be accessed via the Bitcasa app on each of your computers, you'll soon forget about managing space at all.

Bitcasa is still a relatively new service so there's no cost yet. Eventually, Bitcasa may charge a monthly fee for infinite storage. This will be worth it for those looking to simplify their file management and want to back important files at the same time.

Format Factory is a free, fully-featured, converter that enables you to convert audio, video, and even images, between the most popular formats.

Format Factory's supported formats include WMV, AVI, MPG, MP3, WMA, AAC, JPG, PNG, GIF, and many more. Better still, Format Factory supports media formats used by most major portable devices, including PSP and iPhone.

The app is very easy to use, although it does have a slightly unintuitive interface. Format Factory's file browser doesn't appear until you select the target format, which is a bit weird, but as long as you know this it's no problem. You can select individual files to convert, or complete folders, and also tweak some basic conversion settings.

Format Factory isn't particularly original but what makes it really useful is that it handles images as well as audio and video. Most converters like this only handle audio and video, so adding images to the mix gives it an edge, especially considering it's free. We also like the Audio Joiner in Format Factory, which allows you to take two separate clips, join them together and then convert them. It would've been nice to have preset profiles for mobile conversions, but you can't always have it all in a free app!

Format Factory is an excellent conversion tool for anyone who converts between video, audio and images on a regular basis.

Firefox is of course Mozilla's big success story but the Mozilla Foundation do a lot more than web browsers. The unusually named SeaMonkey is a Mozilla product which has lofty ambitions - to be a web browser, advanced email, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor in one.

If this sounds a bit much to pull of well you'd be right. SeaMonkey is a bit of an outdated concept nowadays and it's no surprise that it carried on the work that Netscape started many years ago. It's a lot to get right in one go but this latest release sees SeaMonkey finally brought up to date for the demands of internet users today. And you know from the start it can't be that bad - under the hood, SeaMonkey is based on the same Mozilla source code which powers such things as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro.

The similarities of SeaMonkey with Firefox are obvious from the start and with good reason. SeaMonkey 2.0 has been refurbished with a modern version of Firefox based on Firefox 3.5.4 and is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned. Tabs in SeaMonkey can now be reopened after they have been closed and the way passwords and usernames are handled has been overhauled. To select another part of the suite you want to use, just go to the 'Window' option in the Menu Bar and select either Browser, Mail and Newsgroups, Address Book, IRC Chat and Composer.

There are several other major improvements in SeaMonkey related to the mail client. Setting up an account is easy and retrieving e-mail using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is now faster and mail is synchronized by default by your computer. And at long last, email accounts, folders, and messages can be viewed in tabs.

On the downside, in terms of looks, SeaMonkey hasn't changed an awful lot despite the release of Windows 7. The IRC chat client still looks very basic, techy and intimidating too. Also, some people feel that the new SeaMonkey has moved too far away from it's original Netscape origins in look, functionality and feel. Finally, there seems there is no basic import function to import passwords from earlier versions of Seamonkey or even Firefox, which is a bit annoying.

SeaMonkey will still probably still only appeal to those that have used it from version 1.0 but there's no doubt that this latest release makes it a much more competitive web suite.

It's not often that you get a user-friendly broadcasting application that's good enough for professional use but that's exactly what Wirecast offers.

Wirecast is a simple-to-use broadcast environment that's ideal for producing professional webcasts on a relatively cheap budget. Wirecast allows you to use one or two live/recorded video sources and mix them all together as if you were in a TV mixing studio. You can connect external devices to read video, although some users have reported this can be temperamental as some cameras may not be supported.

The latest version of Wirecast has been updated to add some useful new streaming features enabling you to broadcast the widest possible range of footage. Most interestingly, Wirecast now supports streaming for any iPhone so you can set yourself up as a broadcaster on the move.

Wirecast allows you to add sliding transitions between feeds, and video sources can be cropped less than one minute before airing. There are some technical issues to be aware of. Many users have reported on forums that the source material paths and capture devices are remembered with a project, so Wirecast is not very flexible when sources are changed or material is renamed/moved. In addition, only a small number of characters for each shot name are displayed, which makes it difficult to distinguish between dozens of similar shots for pre-recorded material. However, in the case of such problems, users report that feedback from the program's developer has been prompt and helpful.

Wirecast is a user-friendly yet highly professional tool for creating webcasts that are sure to impress.

RadioZilla is an internet radio and music streaming application that allows you to record live radio stations.

Back in the days of cassette tapes, it was much easier to record songs played over the radio. Nowadays, it's a bit more difficult but RadioZilla aims to make radio recording simpler for the digital age.

Open up RadioZilla and you'll see a list of music genres on the left side. Each one expands to become more specific. There is no search. Click on a radio station that looks good and RadioZilla will begin streaming. If you hear a song that catches your fancy, you can hit the red recording button or hit the "save" button, which detects when a song ends and will stop recording automatically.

Unfortunately RadioZilla is a big headache to use. Many, if not most, of its radio stations simply do not work. There is no error message other than "cannot connect." Radio stations are also sorted improperly. Stations in the 'Classical' section feature stations that played classic rock and romantic love songs instead of classical music from the romantic era.

Overall, RadioZilla is a great idea with poor execution. With streaming services like Spotify, there's really no need to record a low quality song from a radio feed.

Then just sit back and watch the update status bar, as your update progresses to completion.

Allmyapps also offers a search feature, allowing you to search for new Windows apps to download and install.

Apart from a few stability issues where Allmyapps crashed mid-update, this is nifty tool for helping organize and keep the programs you currently have installed on your PC consistently up to date.

If you enjoyed the horror game Slender, you should enjoy this retro 3D adventure Hide. It's a similar game, but with a very different look, and the monsters are different.

This game was created for an indie competition at Super Friendship Club, with the theme of Justice. Hide begins, much like Slender, in a dark forest. There are sirens in the distance, and it's snowing. Your task is to find five locations - every time you find one, someone (or something?) will come looking for you.

The controls are simple, a basic mouse/keyboard set up to move around. The Space key lets you hide (crouch), although you can't hide in plain site of your pursuer, or you will be caught. The sound effects are creepy, and the sound of your breathing really adds to the tension.

The graphics in Hide are solidly 8-bit retro, which I like, but are not to everyone's tastes. They are very atmospheric though, and the light of your pursuer is especially well done, and very nerve wracking!

Can you find all five locations in Hide? See if you can hold it together long enough!

Awesomenauts is filled with whimsical writing, great voice acting, and beautiful graphics. While the story may be secondary to the gameplay, as soon as you start playing, you'll soon forget about the lackluster story.

Awesomenauts is addicting. You will sink hours into this game without realizing it. You and two other players will be put on a team to fight against 3 others. You can join your friends or join strangers as you try to defend your base while trying to destroy your enemies.

There are tons of different types of Awesomenauts to choose from, each having their own unique abilities. It may take a while to settle on one that fits your play style. During the game, you can collect coins, which allow you to buy power-ups and unlock new skills. This all takes place in real time so you have to make your choices quickly.

Awesomenauts' fast paced arena-style battles can go on for over an hour depending on how evenly matched your opponents are. You can taunt players you've killed within the game to provoke them or to tease your friends. Unfortunately there is no team voice chat, which would help coordinate attacks. One ding against Awesomenauts is that newbies may be placed in uneven teams with more advanced players.

Developer, Ronimo Games, has promised to add more Awesomenauts characters and levels in the future, which makes pony up cash for this game less painful. It's interesting to see that Awesomenauts is a paid game while many games are going to the free-to-play model.

If you've never played a MOBA, Awesomenauts is a great taste of what the genre is like. With a ton of characters, weapons, and fun battle mechanics, Awesomenauts keep you coming back.

Have you ever been in a situation where even Windows Task Manager can't close a process or program that has crashed?

ProcessKO is a far more powerful alternative to Windows Task Manager because it kills those hard to close processes that simply won't go away. After releasing a PSP and iPod Touch versions, we've been presented with MediaCoder for Mobile Phone, a new MediaCoder edition that has been especially developed to convert video files to mobile formats such as MPEG-4, 3GP and AVI. While the format selection is not that wide in itself, it should be more than enough to fit most mobile phones nowadays.

The program features three possible interface configurations (Simple, Normal and Expert) from which we recommend the first one, as you don't really need to tweak all the program's settings and it's clearly the easiest to use.

Available formats and codecs can be selected via a drop-down menu: this means you can select them manually, but there are no profiles ready to be used. A standard mobile phone image lets you get an idea of how the video will look like on your device. Sadly there's only one to choose from.

Windows Essentials 2012 may have shed its Live branding but it is still a great starter pack of useful applications.

Windows usually comes with a dearth of apps out of the box but Windows Essentials 2012 solves this problem. It's a big download but that's because it comes with Live Messenger, Photo Gallery, SkyDrive, Live Mail, Live Writer, and Movie Maker. Let's take a deeper look at each program.

Windows Live Messenger

Windows Live Messenger hasn't seen much changed. There's tabbed browsing, Facebook/Linkedin integration, and the ability to log chats. The interface is almost exactly the same as Windows Live Messenger 2011. We would have liked to have seen some more changes to make Windows Live Messenger 2012 relevant in this crowded space. Photo Gallery

Photo Gallery and Movie Maker are the highlights of Windows Essentials 2012 as they received the biggest overhaul. Both programs are now designed for Windows 8 in mind and feature the Microsoft ribbon interface.

You can now tag people in photos in bulk. There's still great social network integration for quick, seamless sharing. There is also a new 'auto collage' feature which blends photos you choose into one fluid picture.

SkyDrive

SkyDrive is perhaps the least exciting but necessary app included in Windows Essentials 2012. Similar to Dropbox's approach, SkyDrive creates a folder that syncs to the cloud and between machines. Make a change to a document on one machine and every other machine you have linked to your SkyDrive will update that document to the latest version. Integration is seamless and you'll soon forget about it, which is good.

Windows Live Mail

While competitors Apple has their default Mail application, Windows doesn't come with a mail client out of the box. Windows Essentials 2012 solves this by bundling Windows Live Mail. It is a solid mail client that offers a good way to manage your mail on the desktop.

There's an offline mode but Live Mail offers little benefit to those who want to manage their mail exclusively in a browser. The Outlook.com redesign helps to make the web site feel like an app so Live mail might not benefit users who prefer the web interface.

Windows Live Writer

Windows Live Writer is the oddball of Windows Essentials 2012. It is basically a writing app that integrates with your Blogger, Wordpress, SharePoint, and other blogging services. You can write, attach photos, and edit the theme of your blog from the application but its features are limited enough that users may as well use the website to make changes. It's a basic WYSIWYG editor that lacks features that would be useful for intermediate and expert bloggers.

Windows Movie Maker

Last but not least, we have Windows Movie Maker, which is the stand out application of Windows Essentials 2012. This basic video editing tool remains great while offering a few new features.

Movie Maker now takes advantage of hardware acceleration, which will speed up video exporting and encoding. There is also a new video stabilization feature, which will be a boon to those with cameras that don't offer this feature. Videos now output to h.264 by default.

The interface of Movie Maker has stayed the same for the most part but integrating audio is easier as you can now look up music from services like AudioMicro, Free Music Archive, and Vimeo Music Store. The video timeline also features a wav form so you can easily see where audio is placed within the video.

Final Words

Windows Essentials 2012 is a great suite of applications that will satisfy most Windows users. While some of its included apps struggle for relevance, many included apps are actually very useful. Best of all, its free and you can select which programs you want to install so you aren't forced to install the entire Windows Essentials 2012 suite.

PictBear is a beginner-friendly image editor and paint program for Windows PCs.

There are a lot of great image editors out there available to download. If you're looking for a new tool to try out, PictBear is a fine option that comes included with a lot of great features to help make image customization a breeze.

Support for layers is often a deciding factor for some users when it comes to choosing a particular image editor. PictBear does include support for layers, as well as brushes developed specifically for the program, which are available on the developer's website. This is an added bonus for people who want to merge images, as well as play around with different filters and hues in one photo that are meant to affect the one it's resting on top of.

PictBear also offers a whole host of filters that can alter the appearance of your pictures quite easily. You can crop out selections of image, resize, and rotate them whichever way you like. Like most image editors, there are also options to change the color balance, brightness, contrast, set it in grayscale, and make the image into its negative.

For users familiar with most mainstream image editors, PictBear is pretty straightforward, and its usability is a plus. New users might initially feel overwhelmed by all of the available options but should soon settle in and begin enjoying the experience of using PictBear.

PictBear is a great alternative to other, free image editors and paint tools for Windows.

Don?t be put off by the name: 'sub' doesn't stand for an inferior program, but actually a very useful one (the 'sub' stands for sub-titles). The idea behind SubLight is simple but great: to watch films on your computer with subtitles in the language of your choice. The program is easy to use but there is still room for improvement.

The good thing about having SubLight is that you will not have to pass through the frustrating process of looking for subtitles on the Internet and find a reader which combines them with your film. With SubLight all you have to do is to upload the film you want to see. If you are lucky, the program will automatically recognize its name and will show you the subtitles available. If not, you can simply type the title in the appropriate field and press the search button.

We have tried with the English IMDB.com top ten list with SubLight of the 90s and found subtitles for each entry in the list. Unfortunately, for non-English films SubLight's selection is limited to only popular classics.

On the whole, SubLight is really useful both for film-lovers and for foreign language students. We just hope the database of subtitles will increase, particularly for foreign films as it makes more sense for an English-speaking audience to watch foreign-language films with English or original subtitles.

SubLight is a very useful application as long as the list of non-English films increases.

Have you ever wanted to take charge of a commercial airliner and fly around the world? Well X-Plane is about as close to the real thing as you?re ever going to get on your PC. Claiming to be the world?s ?most comprehensive, powerful simulator? it?s so accurate that the US and Canadian aviation authorities have given it official approval to train pilots towards their commercial licence.

Of course, those guys are not sat behind a PC in their bedroom - their training is done in a $150,000 simulator - but what they see is exactly what you get on your PC. What?s more, you?re not limited to Earth ? in X-Plane you can even fly around Mars!

Firstly, be warned. X-Plane is one MASSIVE program. Don?t be fooled by the 1.8MB file size in the game description ? that?s just the installer. Once you?ve installed that, a very swanky download dialogue opens to download the other 1.3 gigabytes of the game. All those scenarios, vectored graphics and flight controls take up a lot of hardrive space. Depending on your bandwidth, you will be looking at hours, if not days to download the whole thing.

In this X-Plane demo, you are limited to just one aircraft and five minutes of flight but in the full version, you can take control of props, jets, single- and multi-engine airplanes, as well as gliders, helicopters and VTOLs such as the V-22 Osprey and AV8-B Harrier. It also offers subsonic and supersonic flight dynamics, sporting aircraft from the Bell 206 Jet-Ranger helicopter and Cessna 172 light plane to the supersonic Concorde and Mach-3 XB-70 Valkyrie. In all, about 40 aircraft spanning the aviation industry (and history) with several hundred more which can be freely downloaded from the internet. There?s even a plane builder option which allows you to build your own model.

You can pretty much fly to any location around the world and choose from over 18,000 airports to test your landing and take-off skills. You can even test your mettle on aircraft carriers, helipads, frigates that pitch and roll in the waves, and oil rigs. X-Plane naturally features the whole range of weather conditions you might face and the plane reacts realistically to them. The graphics are vector based so they?re not exactly brilliant but they?re what you?d expect from a simulator .

The biggest problem you?ll have is working out how on earth to get started. X-Plane's controls are incredibly complex to mirror a real commercial airliner. I spent the best part of 10 minutes just sat on the runway trying to work out how to start the engines whilst Air Traffic Control went crazy at me. You are prompted with a few guidelines at how to get rolling (such as ?hit spacebar to release the breaks?) although you?re not told how to start the engines.

There are so many switches and dials in the cockpit that there?s no knowing what to hit without studying the huge flight manual in detail. In the end, the best I managed was to race around the airport before crashing into and destroying a control tower, killing all on board. For those that do have more patience, they need merely move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen where a drop down menu will present access to preferences, instructions, control configuration and many other options.

For those that just want to fly free as a bird and admire the scenery, X-Plane is not for you. For those that want the challenge of mastering a real airliner or are training for a professional license, it?s the best program out there and will have you absorbed for hours.

Newbies will be intimidated and punished for their mistakes but weaker weapons and strategy can often overcome more powerful weapons and a lack of strategy.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero's graphics may be dated but it doesn't really matter as gameplay holds its own, even today. Valve is a master at rewarding players for playing the same game over and over again. Each level and each time you play Counter-Strike: Condition Zero will be completely different, keeping gameplay fresh.

All its features are available through keyboard commands, like window capture, full screen or region, and the results open in a neat editor that gives you all the editing tools you'd expect. The color picker is also useful, allowing you to easily see the RGB code for any color on screen, while the Font viewer does exactly what it says!

Capture.NET's privacy eraser is extensive, meaning you can clean your computer of what you've been up to if necessary. You can also set up a cleaning routine and link it to the alarm clock, so your activity is cleaned automatically at the time of your choice. Otherwise, Capture.NET's alarm clock also works as a normal alarm.

Another useful tool in Capture.NET is the converter, especially useful for changing image formats. There are even more functions suited to advanced users who create web pages and so on. In terms of usability, Capture.NET is mixed. Some of its functions are self explanatory, and others lack necessary instructions. While it looks nice, the buttons on Capture.Net are too small, although all the features can be reached with a right click.

Capture.NET is a useful and portable all-in-one tool, especially for more techy Windows users.

Download Slenderman's Shadow: Hospice 1.3 Free

Slenderman's Shadow: Hospice takes the gameplay of Slender, and puts it in a creepy deserted Hospice. It features the Slenderman, and uses the same idea of having to find notes hidden around that you have to find before Slenderman drives you insane.

The developers admit their debt to the original game, but while Slenderman's Shadow: Hospice is better than Slenderman's Shadow: Sanatorium, it's still not Slender. This is still a scary game - the dark Hospice is scary enough without any monsters in it!

So should you download Slenderman's Shadow: Hospice? If you're looking for more scary chills, the answer is yes, even if it's not quite as good as Slender. The developers are promising more maps in the future, so I hope there is more imagination and variation in them.

ARMED! is a turn-based science fiction strategy game for Windows 8's touch interface.

The premise of ARMED! is simple. Build up defenses around your base and destroy your opponent's. There is a detailed tutorial where it will take you through a full round of the game, explaining every aspect of the game from resource management to attach strategy.

The graphics are mediocre and performance was a bit laggy. Since this is still a preview, there is still plenty of time for the developers of ARMED! to polish it. Controls for ARMED! work well with touch and mouse, though touch is definitely the preferred method of control.

Gameplay of ARMED! is also fun but can get tedious if you prefer real time strategy (RTS) games. You will find yourself waiting to play short rounds. You will spend a majority of your time prepping moves for your next round. ARMED! should really have longer rounds so you're not spending more time preparing than witnessing the action.

Overall, ARMED! is a perfectly mediorce strategy game for Windows 8.

The web version of Angry Birds is almost the same as this Pokki desktop app version. The goal is to destroy the green pigs who've stolen your eggs by smashing the structures they're hiding within or on top of. You do this by firing multi-colored birds strategically towards the pigs. Either knock them off their structures from a height tall enough to kill them, or use their own structures against them by collapsing them on top of the pigs.

Aim is required to be successful at Angry Birds. Depending on the angle and power at which you shoot, one shot could be more effective than others. To help you improve your aim, Angry Birds keeps the trajectory of the previous bird as a dot line on the screen.

Angry Birds for Pokki features 200 levels, but the majority require you to log into your Google/Gmail account in order to access. They?re classified into different groups and become gradually more difficult as you progress through the game.

NirSoft apps are a bunch of handy small tools that you can download separately and use for the most varied purposes: clean Registry values, show information about blue screens of death, list all installed drivers, or check file associations, among others.

NirLauncher makes all these apps more accessible and easier to download. This program works as a kind of menu for NirSoft utilities, presenting them in a conveniently organized interface and enabling you to choose any of them and run it on the spot.

All the apps included in NirLauncher are divided into categories, according to their main function (password recovery, programming, network monitoring, system administration, video/audio related and so on). The program doesn't feature a search tool, something that would be really useful if you're looking for a specific app.

NirLauncher lets you run the NirSoft apps in standard or advanced mode, and also includes the option to launch them with admin rights. On the downside, I think the program's interface design could be improved a lot. It looks like one of those old Windows 98 programs!

NirLauncher includes more than a hundred small apps to clean, tweak, manage and learn more about your system.

Do you remember the good old days when you'd use a sticky post-it note to write down your to-do list? Tomboy presents you with a virtual option to do something similar.

RSS or Real Simple Syndication, is an ever more popular way to follow the news on Internet. By subscribing to an XML or RSS link, a user can receive all the latest information from multiple sources in one page.
Online RSS readers like Google Reader, Bloglines or Rojo are now very popular among users yet you can also use an external RSS reader like Feeddemon to keep up with the flow of information.

Feeddemon is easy to install and although it will ask you for a Newsgator account, you can still launch it even if you don?t have one. The program can import all of your previous subscriptions or it can suggest new feeds to you in all sorts of categories like business, sports or entertainment.

Once launched, the program automatically downloads the latest posts. Feeds are saved in different categories so that you know where to find them.
You can also use the search function to find a post containing a particular word. Thanks to the custom news watch, you can get Feeddemon to find news according to certain keywords.
This is extremely useful if you?re doing a research paper or investigating a particular topic.
The program window includes a browser window, so you won?t need to open up your internet browser to read your feeds.
Feeddemon also supports tabs, allowing you to keep a good deal of posts open for future reading. If you want to save posts, you can flag them, save them as favourites or create a newsbin to store similar articles.

Apart from letting you customize the age limit of new posts and the amount that appears daily, you can use the Clean Up Wizard to get rid of older or unread posts.
This is extremely useful as, with so much information being handled, it?s easy to clutter up your newsreader with irrelevant posts.
Feeddemon handles podcasts just like any other RSS feed, however, to play them, either you?ll have to open up the MP3 file in a browser window or download it and play it with the MP3 player of your choice.
It would have been more user-friendly if Feeddemon had included an embedded media player to play podcasts.
If you?re on the move, you can still check your feeds stored in Feeddemon online through your Newsgator account.
If you don?t have one, take a few seconds to sign up as it?ll also let you use other Newsgator tools like Feedstation.
Apart from this full range of features, the real update in version 2.
1 is that Feeddemon has finally integrated the social networking aspect. You can now configure your default blog publisher and send interesting posts to your blog or to delicious and Digg.

We enjoyed using Feeddemon and were excited by all the freedom it gave users in managing their RSS feeds. The profusion of options in the interface can confuse first time users and we?ve suffered occasional lags when updating feeds, yet that?s quite common with any RSS reader.
Feeddemon is a top choice external RSS reader which any news junkie will quickly get addicted to. If you?re not so hooked on feeds, it might be too much to handle though.

Bubble Star is a classic puzzle game for Windows 8 where you pop combination of bubbles.

Bubble Star brings nothing new but remains addicting. Players are given a cannon to shoot randomly colored bubbles. Combine three or more of the same colored bubbles and they'll pop. Every move you make brings the ceiling of bubbles closer to you. Once the bubbles cross the line, the game's over.

Bubble Star gives players a score based on how quickly they can pop all the bubbles in a level. Here's where accuracy and planning pay off. The ceiling won't come down as you plan your move so you have plenty of time to strategize.

Levels get progressively harder and more difficult challenges are given to the player. Bubble Star includes moving levels and power ups to keep gameplay fresh.

Overall, Bubble Star brings nothing new to the table but is still fun and challenging.

FrostWire is an open source Peer to Peer (P2P) application based on the Gnutella network and a popular alternative to the now defunct Limewire.

In fact, FrostWire has more than just a few similarities to Limewire, although unlike the latter, it does not carry advertising and there are no annoying pop-ups. Just as Limewire was, FrostWire is straightforward and easy to use. A simple search bar, divided by category, makes it a breeze to browse for a file, whether it is a video, image, audio, or program. FrostWire also has a What?s New button to check out what popular files users have recently exchanged.

One particularly handy feature of FrostWire is a special direct connect option. If you know the IP address of one of your friends, type it in the box and FrostWire will browse to that user?s files. This is a quick way of sharing files with someone you know although it would be even better if you could enter the username of a user rather than the IP address.

In terms of speed, much will depend on the speed of your own connection. It definitely helps though if you've correctly opened your router's ports and whether you?re downloading a popular file or not. To avoid the risk of downloading copyrighted or adult material, FrostWire also allows you to apply content filters. Another handy feature of FrostWire is a built-in media player. Video and audio can be tested using Frostwire?s media player which gives you an immediate preview of your file.

It should be noted that FrostWire is basically a stripped-down version of Limewire, but is a not-for-profit project. The developer claims it will never support Digital Rights Management (DRM) or any type of advertising. However, the demise of Limewire due to legal issues mean that FrostWire may well be targeted in the future for closure.

FrostWire for Mac is a hugely popular alternative for anyone who misses Limewire.

Ashampoo Snap è un eccellente programma per fotografare lo schermo e modificare lo screenshot subito senza aprire editor di terze parti. Molto intuitivo e ricco di funzioni, risulta ideale per creare tutorial grafici o video chiari e ben fatti. In inglese

A volte catturare lo schermo non è sufficiente. Magari vorresti evidenziare un'area dell'immagine oppure ritagliare solo una parte di essa. O magari creare un v ideo tutorial con tanto di audio. Con Ashampoo Snap puoi catturare immagini e video, nonché modificare il risultato ottenuto in pochi e semplici passi.

Ashampoo Snap include un editor con vari effetti speciali a disposizione: frecce, evidenziatori, forme e testi per rendere più chiari i tuoi screenshot. Ovviamente, sono presenti anche le funzioni di editing più comuni per ridimensionare, tagliare, copiare e migliorare un'immagine. E puoi persino catturare video e registrare la tua voce da aggiungere come traccia audio.

Tutto questo in un'interfaccia semplice e curata, facile da usare per chiunque. Puoi accedere alle funzioni di Ashampoo Snap dalla toolbar a scomparsa nella parte superiore dello schermo oppure da una favicon sulla system tray. Catturata l'immagine si apre automaticamente l'accattivante editor con tutte le funzioni a portata di mano. Ottimo software, Ashampoo Snap, ma le finestre di aiuto troppo solerti risultano un po' irritanti.

Opera USB è la versione portatile del noto browser Opera. Vive dentro una pendrive, e ti consente di avere profilo, impostazioni e preferiti sempre con te. Nessuna differenza con l'originale. Anzi, una sola: lo porti ovunque

Opera è stato in grado di ritagliarsi numerosi consensi. È un browser robusto, stabile, ricco di funzioni e che non ha nulla da invidiare ai più diffusi Internet Explorer e Firefox. Opera USB è la versione "portatile" del browser norvegese.

Portatile perchè Opera USB va inserito nella tua pen drive ed eseguito da lì. Il profilo verrà creato nella stessa cartella senza lasciare alcuna traccia sul computer in cui verrà usato.

In Opera USB la lingua di default è l'inglese. Ma non è un problema, potrai impostare manualmente l'italiano dal menu delle opzioni. Quali sono le differenze strutturali tra la versione "portable" e la versione standard di Opera? Nessuna. È una fotocopia dell'originale, né più né meno.

Opera USB è quindi molto indicato se ami questo browser e ti trovi spesso a lavorare sul PC di altre persone o in un Internet-point. Avrai sempre sotto mano il tuo profilo, le tue impostazioni preferite e i tuoi bookmark. Tutto questo in pochi MB di spazio. Fantastico.

L'utilizzo di Razer Game Booster è semplice: lo installi e quando lo lanci premi il tasto "Attiva la modalità Gaming". A questo punto Razer Game Booster ti sottoporrà una lista di programmi. Puoi selezionarli tutti per la disabilitazione o lasciarne alcuni in esecuzione. Ripristinare tutto è altrettanto facile. Quando smetti di giocare, premi il tasto "Torna alla modalità normale" e tutti i servizi e programmi verranno riattivati.

Volendo, dalla schermata principale di Razer Game Booster è possibile configurare quali servizi del sistema operativo devono essere disabilitati. Il consiglio è di mantenere le opzioni di default. Game Booster è ben pensato e a meno che tu non abbia una configurazione particolare, non dovrebbero esserci problemi di sorta.

Razer Game Booster difficilmente farà miracoli. Però è un sistema rapido per pulire la RAM e ottimizzare l'uso del processore. Soprattutto ha il vantaggio di ripristinare velocemente la configurazione originale.

LogMeIn Hamachi è probabilmente la soluzione più semplice per creare una rete virtuale tra computer connessi a Internet. Le connessioni sono sicure e lo scambio di dati è diretto

Basato sul protocollo UDP, LogMeIn Hamachi ti permette di creare una rete virtuale a cui altri utenti possono accedere per condividere file. Tutto questo attraverso una normale connessione a Internet e senza dover impostare nulla, se non un nome per la rete e una password d'accesso.

È tutto così semplice perché nelle fasi iniziali di connessione i client Hamachi ricevono l'aiuto di un server di mediazione gestito dai produttori del programma. Il server solamente facilita la connessione e l'inizializza. Una volta stabilito il collegamento, lo scambio di dati tra i PC è diretto, senza ingerenze esterne. Si crea quindi un classico sistema peer-to-peer (P2P).

L'interfaccia è semplicissima. Una piccola finestrella mostra tutte le reti a cui si è connessi e i computer collegati a ciascuna di esse. Hamachi offre anche una semplice chat testuale per comunicare velocemente con gli altri membri. Queste comunicazioni, così come qualunque altro scambio di dati tra i PC, sono protette mediante la crittografia, per tanto dovrebbe essere impossibile interpretare dall'esterno i dati trasmessi.

In Christmas Super Frog devi aiutare una rana amica di Babbo Natale a recuperare pacchi dono, attraversando pericolose strade trafficate

Chi è che si ricorda di Frogger alzi la mano. Si tratta di un vecchio gioco in cui bisogna aiutare una rana ad attraversare una strada trafficata evitando che venga schiacciata dalle vetture di passaggio. Christmas Super Frog è più o meno questo, ma in versione natalizia.

L'adattamento per la festività del 25 dicembre è piuttosto banale. Più che altro a livello narrativo e grafico. La rana deve attraversare la strada per raggiungere dei pacchi regalo persi da Babbo Natale la sera della vigilia. A livello grafico, Christmas Super Frog aggiunge un po' di neve, una pozza d'acqua ghiacciata da superare passando su dei sassi e calze e dolci volanti da evitare.

Christmas Super Frog non offre molto altro, se non una serie di livelli che diventano più difficili, con l'aumentare del traffico e della presenza di ostacoli. Insomma, il solito Frogger.

BitLord è un programma con cui scaricare torrent da Internet, permettendoti dunque di utilizzare uno dei più noti e usati sistemi di file sharing. BitLord si configura facilmente. A meno di non avere esigenze di rete particolari, la configurazione preliminare si limita all'indicazione del tipo di connessione e delle porte di rete da utilizzare.

All'interno dell'interfaccia di BitLord puoi trovare tutto il necessario per sfruttare al meglio questo sistema P2P. Include anche un motore di ricerca per trovare torrent su Internet, ma è un po' confuso, soprattutto a causa della pubblicità che imperversa un po' in tutte le finestre del programma. Se si vuole un'interfaccia più chiara, il consiglio è di rivolgersi all'ottimo uTorrent.
